OER life writing: Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy

The lesson focuses on Stevenson’s multi-award-winning life’s work Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption, which was first published in 2014 and was also made into a film in 2019. In his memoirs, Stevenson recounts his career as a criminal defense attorney fighting for the legal representation of his disadvantaged clients. The memoir provides first-hand insights into the injustices of the US justice system (with a particular focus on the issues of mass incarceration and the death penalty), systemic racism and other forms of discrimination. The book’s chapters document Stevenson’s work on cases with clients who were either wrongfully or unjustly convicted: Most of them are People of Color, some of them were still children when they committed the crime for which they received a life sentence, others come from unstable family backgrounds or are mentally disabled and therefore should not have been held accountable for their crime in the same way as non-disabled people. Stevenson strives to provide a comprehensive and detailed account of the lives of his clients, quite a few of whom were victims of domestic violence, rape or social/racial violence and discrimination.

The material designed by the students illustrates how the genre of life writing can be integrated into today’s EFL lessons as an important example of non-fiction texts (see “Info sheet: Overview of 9 lessons”). The material contains tasks for intensive and extensive reading, includes graphic organizers that structure the reading process, and uses digital tools such as the concept board.

As the book deals with sensitive issues such as racism, discrimination and abuse, teachers might consider issuing a warning about certain passages before reading a chapter or several chapters of the book in class.

Chapter six of Brian Stevenson’s “Just Mercy” could be covered in the context of teaching about racism and African Americans in the United States. These topics encompass both historical perspectives and contemporary references and could be addressed as part of the curriculum’s required topic of regional identities. The curriculum requires students to have a basic knowledge of everyday culture, the issues facing young adults growing up in the target culture, and its social and cultural conditions. Life story writing lessons can provide a unique perspective on another person’s life. Seeing the experiences of others in a new cultural setting from their perspective creates an awareness of their struggles, motivations, conflicts, or beliefs. This awareness, in turn, challenges students’ assumptions and can help them rethink their own outlook on life. Stories like Charlie’s in “Just Mercy” are important when talking about discrimination, racism and the prison system in the United States.

True Justice Documentary

In addition to the book, some lesson examples include selected scenes from the film Just Mercy (2019) by director Destin Daniel Cretton and the HBO documentary True Justice (2019) by Peter Kunhardt. The material can be found here.

The lesson contains four clips from the documentary True Justice. Clips 1 through 3 focus on the personal story of R.H. Hinton, a victim of injustice. They illustrate the arrest and conviction (Clip 1), the fight for justice and court appeal (Clip 2), release, life after prison, and a personal reflection (Clip 3). Clip 4 focuses on the broader context, dissecting the narrative theme of racial bias and emphasizing the need for a “truth and reconciliation movement” in the US.
